Research into Target Audience

As the genre of my music magazine is Pop, my target audience will be those who are into this type of music. This could be both males and females which could range from children to teenagers to those in their 20's. So I have decided that the target audience for my magazine will be students in secondary school and anyone in university.

Editing images

To help me with my real music mag task, I practised taking my own photos using some of the different camera techniques. I then chose my favourite on then used an editing software called Adobe Photoshop Elements to create my poster.

Here is the original photo I chose to edit.

This is my final poster. The image itself has been changed to black and white which I think gives it a profession look - as well as the photo colour, the text and kicker is also black and white giving consistency. Depth of field can be seen as one girl is behind the other, giving an effect and not making the image boring as they are not standing side by side. Also, the way the image has been taken itself is suitable for a poster like this as it is a medium shot of the girls with no facial expression.

Camera Angles

Here are some photos I have found whilst researching - I have looked at each and thought about the different techniques that have been used.

This is a professional shoot and you can tell as they are posing. This image has a multiple focus effect as they are all looking in different directions - the audience are not focused on just on member. Also, as the colour of image has been changed, it gives it more of a professional look.

This image of Kelly Clarkson looks like it isn't posed but is when she is actually performing. The image has been edited as the background has been removed. The use of cropping has been used to cut some of her legs off, which in a way draws some of the audiences' attention to her face and her actions.

Double Page Spread Analysis 3

Double Page Spread 3

Half of this double page spread is of the image of Lily Allen standing in a friendly pose which invites the reader in to read the article. As well as that, the big bold title 'People think I'm an attention seeker, but I'm just honest' also appeals to readers who may or may not know who Lily Allen is but could create an interest for them to carry on reading the article. I think it is important for the title of the page to be big and bold to clearly state what the article will be about so that it invites the audience in. The title is a quote from Lily Allen which could be seen as targeting the audience of young teenagers as it gives a sense of her rebelling, which stereotypically, will attract the attention of some teenagers.

The colour scheme matches Lily Allen's outfit, red, white and black. There are some red text in the rest of the text which is black, to emphasis certain parts. Her hair is a quite a messy look which could again reflect and symbolize her as a rebel again attracting teenagers. Without even reading the article which is split into 4 columns, all of this gives a clear idea and hints to the audience about what the article is about. Below the title, is a short introduction to what the article is about, persuading the audience to carry on reading. I like the layout of this double page spread because it doesn't look boring yet doesn't look too cluttered.

Double Spread Page Analysis 2

Double Spread Page 2

The genre of this is R&B and clearly is about Jamelia, "THE QUEEN OF UK R&B ON FINDING HER VOICE, AND FEELING EXPOSED" - the two images of her show that these two pages are all about her and how she got where she is today. The colours used are consistent and are also easy to read. The use of orange and white show the interview's questions and Jamelia's answers. I think the black background goes well with the colour of the text, and it reflects the genre of R&B. For example, colours like bright pink and bright blue wouldn't really match this genre, it would go more with Pop. Also, the amount of text again is again is just right - not too less and not over the top.

I particularly like the presentation and unique style of the way the images are transparent and can be seen through the colour black. I like this one double page spread more than the previous one as it is more unique and more appealing. I can tell that the designer of these pages have put a lot of thought and effort into it and I may use these ideas on my own music mag. The way her name has been put on itself, isn't just plain and boring. The letters are filled with the actual image where it overlaps, and the rest of the image is black and white.

Double Page Spread Analysis

Double Page Spread 1

The image of Florence and The Machine fills up just over half of this double page spread and the name of her new song "got the love" is the title of the two pages, which is in black, on top of the magazine's name "USA". It clearly tells the audience what these pages consists of - and anyone interested in her or the particular genre of Indie music may have a read. I like the layout because it is simple and not crowded. The storyline says, "She's 2009's biggest success story, with America at her feet. So why is Florence Welch on the floor attacking herself?" The first line in a way introduces her to those who may not know her, then the question of her attacking herself on the floor is sort of.. unusual, therefore may draw in people to read the article.

The information is in three columns on the right side of the double page spread. I think the amount is just correct - it isn't too small, not giving enough news, and there isn't too much which may frighten the reader away. I will take into consideration the amount of writing I will put on my own music magazine using this as guide. As I also like the enlarged image of Florence and the colours used - red is a bright bold colour which is attracting.

Contents Page Analysis 3

Contents Page 3

Billboard's contents page's main focus is the long shot image of pop singer Hayley Williams dressed in white and red looking rather jolly. I think this immediately creates a happy mood across the page as it is in the centre of the page. On the left of her is title names and pages with the same consistency throughout, (same font used for the titles and page numbers) and on her right is a strip of 3 images, with page numbers in the corner. This clearly shows that the layout is split into three columns giving it a professional, simple-to-follow layout. Not only is there a title for each page but for each section there is also a subheading, which clearly states what each will include e.g. 'features' and 'music'. This will help the reader identify/find what they may be looking for.

The title 'CONTENTS' in block bold capitals has a kind of broken type of font which could symbolize that the pages within the magazine are broken into sections again making it easier for the reader to understand. I don't particularly think the genre Pop immediately comes to mind when looking at this page because the font looks quite formal and not 'fun' as you would think Pop would reflect. I would take this into consideration when creating my own and think about the colours and

I like the way this long shot of 50 Cent takes up half the page and the other half is what is included in the mag. The layout is clear and easy to follow - it isn't busy like the previous contents page I analysed. The colours used keeps the consistency flowing throughout the page. Red, black and grey are suitable colours for the genre HipHop/RnB. Below each page title has a short sentence about what each topic is about. They are all capitalised and bold and beside each is the page number in red, again keeping it consistent and giving it a professional look.
